📖 Yellow pagesFirst about PPA (Personal Package Archive)
PPAs have not undergone the same process of validation as regular Linux packages. End users install PPAs at their own risk. Although each key is cryptographically signed, in order to confirm an uploader, keys are not matched to specific individuals, except via their Launchpad accounts.
Subsequently, installing a PPA should be considered to be a low-security alternative as compared to the main repository. As part of adding a PPA, you trust the developer to not only install packages, but also to allow them to provide software updates.

A tool for losslessly optimizing PNG and JPG files. Trimage is a utility that reduces the size of images by re-encoding (compressing) them. The encoding/compression is lossless, meaning that the images won’t lose any data, it just re-encodes them with aggressive image compression settings.
Once the encoding starts, there is no way of stopping it! So, use this tool with a backup copy first before you go with the original images files.
sudo apt-get install trimage

Since a couple of days I am testing the most recent Linux Ubuntu 18.04 - codenamed Bionic Beaver - within Oracle VM Virtual Box under Ubuntu 16.04 & Windows 8.1 .
root@ubuntu-18.04:# apt install virtualbox
Users with MS Windows under their nails follow this link: https://www.virtualbox.org
Spot yourself the official Ubuntu release: http://releases.ubuntu.com/
and download the appropiate .iso-file.
Canonical has promised better boot speed in Ubuntu 18.04. Using systemd’s features, bottlenecks will be identified and tackled to boot Bionic Beaver as quickly as possible. Compared with Ubuntu 16.04 even this shows in a virtual box positively.
You will see the new ‘minimal installation’ option when you do a fresh setup of Ubuntu 18.04. This minimal setup is nothing but the regular Ubuntu install without most of the regular software. You’ll just get the web browser and a handful of basic utilities. Minimal
is faily enough to start with ...
🗳 ... but ... wait ...
... apart from all the common installations my favourite desktop environment became the Ubuntu Budgie
distro. Customizations are eays and just a click away. Ubuntu Budgie
comes with a bunch of applications. It has some fresh dark and light themes with new icons, a kind of Gnome tweak & tools implemented.

Zim is a small desktop wiki, which runs as a stand-alone program. With Zim it's relatively easy to structure thoughts, collect ideas or build your own knowledge base. The application was originally written in Perl, later ported to Python (starting with Ubuntu 10.04) and uses the GTK library, which makes it particularly suitable for GNOME or Xfce. Zim also runs smoothly under KDE, other desktop environments or Windows.
The installation from the official package sources is done via the package.
root@ubuntu-18.04:# apt install zim
The Zim interface starts with the standard page. Here you can type in text directly, exactly as you would expect from a normal editor. Words and phrases can be formatted or linked as desired.
Since Zim-Wiki data consists of a directory tree with simple text files and attached files, you can easily copy or share the wiki folder, e.g. with friends, so that they can access the "knowledge database". The most convenient access is of course with installed Zim, but it is synonymous with any file manager and a text editor.

Kazam is a simple screen recording program that will capture the content of your screen and record a video file that can be played by any video player that supports VP8/WebM video format.
Kazam is available from Debian / Ubuntu / Linux Mint repository, just run the command in terminal.
root@ubuntu-18.04:# apt install kazam
First the program opens the main window. You decide whether to record a video or if you want to take a screenshot. Now you set the area that you want to record. Here you can choose between full screen, a window or any section. Furthermore, you can choose whether the mouse pointer should be included and whether the sound from a microphone or system should be recorded during a screen capture. In addition, you can still set a delay in seconds, after the recording is triggered.
After completing a screencast you will be asked if you want to open the video with an external editor or want to save it on disk. If, on the other hand, you have only taken a screenshot, you can only save it.

Youtube-dlG is a simple graphical interface for the command line program youtube-dl. Beyond to Linux, it can also be used under Windows. Please note: The use of the program depends on the legal framework in the home country or at the location of the user. It was created with Python.
Youtube-dlG is not included in the official Linux packages.
The practical use is very simple: You copy the Internet address (URL, also several consecutive) of the desired video and insert it in the upper half of the program. Then you check whether the options correspond to your own wishes (for example the storage location) and start the process with "Download". If a file has been successfully downloaded, a corresponding confirmation pops up. Now mark the URL(s) and delete them.
If you encounter problems: ~/.config/youtube-dlg/
contains a log file with further information (English).
